The History of the Pokémon World · Chapter X

Most of this history is legend even inside the games: told by elders, carved on ruins, sung by minstrels or written in old books. Every line below is quoted from a game or retold closely, and each one says where it comes from. Legends are captioned as legends, a character's guess as speculation, and where the games disagree with each other, the page says so.

The games rarely give dates, so the chapters run roughly from the oldest stories to the most recent, each placed by its main story. A chapter without a stated date says so. Quotes from older games are shown in modern capitalisation.

The Blinding One

Long ago · The games give no year.

Ultra Megalopolis's ancestors tried to control Necrozma's light, and it stole all the light it could find. Long ago it also battled the tapu in Alola.

  1. “The islands of Alola were given form when underwater volcanoes erupted long, long ago.”

Pokémon Sun and Moon · Book, “On the Origins of the Alola Region”

  2. In Ultra Megalopolis, the Ultra Recon Squad tell their own history.

“Our ancestors were greedy, and they sought to control all of Necrozma's light...”

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon · The Ultra Recon Squad

  3. “They only hurt Necrozma, making it lose a part of itself and causing it to run wild and steal all the light it could find!”

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon · The Ultra Recon Squad

  4. “That's why we have Necrozma cooped up in the Megalo Tower our great ancestors built.”

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon · The Ultra Recon Squad

  5. “According to the records... this is where Necrozma battled against the tapu when it came to Alola long ago, hungering for its light.”

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon · The Ultra Recon Squad

  6. “It's thought the power that came pouring out of the Ultra Wormhole at that time may be the source of Z-Moves' power...”

How to read the tags. Myth, Legend and Folk tale: the game tells it as a story. Implied: follows closely from what the games state. Theory and Speculation: a character's idea or guess. Sources differ: the games tell it more than one way. Untagged lines are stated outright.

The anime and films have their own continuity, kept apart above. Looking for when the games, anime and films came out? See the Pokémon Timeline.
